Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is home base for the award-winning composer and musician Darren Michael Boyd. His solo career started as a form of therapy for the physical and psychological complications that followed a life-altering car accident, and he has released 6 albums and over 25 music videos since 2019. His sound has been dubbed “Spooky Surf” by fans and has been described as “Dick Dale meets Joe Satriani in a horror movie”.
Previously, Darren has also toured/recorded with acts such as Creeping Beauty and Famous Underground, featuring Juno award- winning vocalist Nicholas Walsh (Slik Toxik).
Boyd’s self-produce music video for “Perpetual Night” was selected for the Tokyo Lift-Off Festival in May of 2026.
Boyd was a three-time finalist with an honourable mention in the Guitarist Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina in December of 2025.
In October 2025, Boyd recorded a cover song of Spinal Tap's Hell Hole with Astrid Young for the tribute album The Majesty of Rock. The album was a fundraiser for Teen Cancer America, a charity founded by Roger Daltrey & Pete Townshend. The release was covered by Billboard Magazine, and features members of Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Go-Go’s, Mastodon, System Of A Down, Soul Asylum, and many more.
In June of 2025, Boyd received an award for Best Music Video from The Alternative Film Festival in Toronto (ALTFF) for Perpetual Night. The album Perpetual Night was released on Halloween, 2025.
Boyd ended off 2024 winning Composer of the Year at the Red Carpet Awards Show in Europe.
Also in 2024, Boyd received Three Josie Music Award nominations - Musician of the Year (Guitarist), Song of the Year for Darkling, and Instrumental Album of the Year for Hexalogy. Boyd attended the awards show in Nashville, Tennessee at the Grand Ole Opry House in October, among the 3% of submissions to be nominated out of 75,000.
In October of 2023, Boyd’s sixth release, Hexalogy, arrived just in time for Halloween.
In 2023, The Red Carpet Show in Holland nominated Boyd for Most Appreciated Musician, and Misty Mundae in two categories: Best Music Video and Instrumental Song.
He previously won Best North American Music Video in the Toronto Independent Film Festival for the self-produced “Arachnochakra”.
Boyd was Voted Best Guitar Teacher, in the Ottawa Valley/North Grenville Readers Choice Awards.
While working on his first full-length solo album, Boyd simultaneously performed with The Mississippi Mudds Theatre Group in 2019 to play guitar for a sold out run of Queen’s We Will Rock You, and won the Ottawa Faces Magazine award for Favourite Theatre Group.
Boyd was invited multiple occasions to privately audition for platinum-selling artist Fefe Dobson, and asked to write songs for Beasto Blanco, featuring long-time Alice Cooper bassist Chuck Garric and Alice Cooper’s daughter Calico Cooper.
In 2008, Darren received a scholarship to Guitar Workshop Plus in Toronto, with some of the best players in the business as instructors (Paul Gilbert/Billy Sheehan/Sue Foley). He has shared the stage with such acts as One-Eyed Doll, Wednesday 13, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stryper, Beasto Blanco, and Lee Aaron.
